Castro Statement on San Antonio Coronavirus Case
WASHINGTON—Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, and member of the House Intelligence and Education and Labor Committees, today released the following statement after the confirmation of one coronavirus diagnosis in San Antonio, Texas:
“My job as Congressman is to ensure the people of San Antonio are safe and protected. Our community is well-equipped to provide the care this patient needs. Although I was not informed ahead of time about the use of Lackland Air Force Base to quarantine evacuees from Wuhan, I have since been in contact with the CDC and local officials on a daily basis. I am confident in the collaborative work of both federal and local authorities to contain and mitigate the virus. We have the best disease control personnel in the country managing this situation on-the-ground. I am also confident in the medical and public health officials who responded to the call of duty to care for and monitor the evacuees. My most urgent concern is for the care of this individual and for the doctors and nurses attending to them. But all the medical professionals handling the patient are highly trained and following strict protocol to ensure the health of everyone involved. To the residents of San Antonio, I will reiterate that everything is well in our community. Our federal and local agencies are working day and night to keep the people of San Antonio safe.”
